What Is Covering You Today?

Scripture: Psalm 5:11–12

But let all who take refuge in you rejoice;
let them ever sing for joy.
Spread your protection over them,
so that those who love your name may exult in you.

For you bless the righteous, O Lord;
you cover them with favor as with a shield. (NRSV)

Observation:

We are all invited to take refuge in the Lord. Listen to the language here—those who trust in the Lord’s protection rejoice!

They sing with joy in their hearts because they are covered by the Lord.

Application:

When I was a little girl, I loved building “tents” out of blankets in the living room. Oh, what fun! Somehow, putting up those blankets and setting up a little “house” underneath was fun—and it also felt very secure. The outside world couldn’t see in, and I could feel safe and protected. It was my own little secret place where my dolls and I could hang out.

Today, I believe the Lord is inviting us into just such a space. Not to “hide” from the world, but to know that in the midst of a world that might feel quite crazy, He is our shield and our protector. He is our safe place. He is the One we can go to in the midst of fear, anxiety, and frustration.

And even when the circumstances around us don’t change, we can find refuge in Him.

Not only does He want us to know that we are safe in His care, but He wants to bring us joy. If we are seeking the things of this world to provide us with security and joy, we are looking in the wrong place. The things and leaders of this world will come and go. God will never leave us or forsake us.

He wants to cover us with “favor as with a shield.” That is a beautiful promise!

What is covering you today?

Prayer:

Lord, I am so grateful for Your love and protection. Help me to trust in You today and rest in the joy that You provide. Amen.
